As with any town, Oakbridge was a community of people that coexisted on a day-to-day basis. The Fire Brigade, Police, Council Workers, Gas Workers, Electrical Workers, Garage Owner, Vicar and all the other people living out their lives in a vibrant market town. Especially Gloria, whom Alan fancied and I suspect she fancied him, but as in many young relationships, they tended to play games aimed at hiding it from others.

Tom lived with his wife, Helen, in a tied cottage above Oakbridge where an underground reservoir was situated. The cottage came with the job. The cottage next door was occupied by Tom's Assistant Alan Sparks who was single and a bit reckless at times.

Most mornings Tom and Alan would cycle together to the office based in the depot at Trentham to carry out any paperwork and if required give a Jointer and his team of Trenchmen their orders for the day.

So here is one of Tom's funniest stories from his time as a Turncock in the 1960's. A story that starts with a bang! In fact, lots of bangs!
